We are fast approaching towards the end of another glorious year 2008 and praying for a new beginning with New Year 2009. Count down has begun! So, enjoy the festive session.
Today I am writing this blog after watching a glimpse of today’s Indian Idol episode where Olympic bronze medalist Vijendra Kumar made a special appearance. That time I was wondering how a good performance in any field of sport can catch the media attention. In India, you will always hear that sponsorship is always for the game of cricket. Millions of dollars are pouring and backing the game and it is just believed to be a religion in this sub continental area. And in every talk shows, media coverage every individual will blame because of this biasing other sport in the country is lacking sponsorship and we are not getting any good sportsperson or performance to cherish in the field of other sports.
I also believe that but today I cannot go with this point of view. It is not that cricket is only sport being played over India for the last century. There are various other sports where we really excelled in those like hockey, football , kaba-di etc. it is only after winning the World Cup in 1983 by Kapil’s XI that really changed the scenario for the game of cricket. But that doesn’t mean that sponsors from other sports just leave that sport and begin to support cricket. It is not that.
It is only that string of poor performances, lack of support from the common people that have brought the downfall of other sports. If there is support it is only in some patches. Like the football derby in Kolkata is worth mentioning. But it is not enough for the sponsors to be attracted.
You will find that after Leander Paes and Mahes Bhupati’s goods performance in the field of tennis have make that sport a very popular among the Indians whose end product is Sania Mirza, Somdev Burwan etcs.
Visnawnathan Annad is the number 1 chess player in the world but before him there is no one whom he can follow. But because of his pure dedication and hard work he has reached his goal. But he never blamed sponsors during his struggle period. And now we have a pool of talented chess players who still lack sponsor support.
So, my personal point of view is that having bad performance and losing sponsors and just blame cricket for it is a excuse. Time has arrived for the sportsman of other field to pull up their shocks and deliver good performance in that field and still if sponsors don’t come their way then they start the blame again. But during that time they may try to improve their own performance.
No more today. Hope to meet you soon…..
